Kidney Function Panel (BMP/CMP)

Kidney Health

5-10 minutesBlood draw

Blood tests that evaluate how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood.

Duration
5-10 minutes
Sample Type
Blood draw ()
Results Timeline
1-2 business days
May require fasting depending on other tests ordered

How to Prepare

Follow these instructions to ensure accurate test results

Fasting may be required
Check with your doctor - often 8-12 hours fasting is needed
Stay well hydrated
Drink plenty of water unless fasting includes fluids
Things to Avoid
  • High-protein meals 24 hours before (can affect creatinine)
  • Strenuous exercise 24 hours before
  • Creatine supplements 24-48 hours before

Day of Your Test

  • Confirm fasting requirements with your lab
  • Avoid strenuous exercise before the test
  • Bring list of all medications and supplements

What This Measures

To screen for kidney disease, monitor kidney function, and check electrolyte balance.

  • Creatinine - a waste product from normal muscle metabolism
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) - waste from protein breakdown
  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) - how well kidneys filter blood
  • Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate

Why This Test Matters

Kidneys filter waste, regulate blood pressure, and maintain electrolyte balance. Early detection of kidney problems allows treatment to prevent progression to kidney failure.

Normal Ranges

Creatinine
Waste product filtered by kidneys
0.7-1.3 mg/dL (men), 0.6-1.1 mg/dL (women)
BUN
Blood urea nitrogen
7-20 mg/dL
eGFR
Estimated kidney filtration rate; normal threshold varies by age and lab
Above 60 mL/min

Reference intervals vary by laboratory, analyzer, methodology, population, and units. The ranges shown here are for education only. Always interpret your results against the reference interval printed on your own lab report.

After the Test

  • Eat normally after the test
  • Resume regular activities and medications

Understanding Results

If High

High creatinine or BUN may indicate kidney dysfunction. Dehydration, certain medications, and high-protein diet can also elevate levels.

If Low

Low eGFR indicates reduced kidney function. Stages of kidney disease are determined by eGFR levels.

Good to Know

  • Muscle mass affects creatinine levels
  • Hydration status significantly impacts results
  • Many medications affect kidney function tests
  • Single abnormal result should be confirmed with repeat testing

Follow Up

  • Abnormal results may need repeat testing or additional tests
  • If kidney disease detected: regular monitoring and treatment
  • Annual screening recommended for high-risk individuals
