Liver Health

5 minutesBlood draw

Blood tests that measure enzymes and proteins to assess liver health and function.

Duration
5 minutes
Sample Type
Blood draw ()
Results Timeline
1-2 business days
Fasting may be required

How to Prepare

Follow these instructions to ensure accurate test results

8-12 hours fasting may be required
Check with your doctor about fasting requirements
24-48 hours before
Avoid alcohol consumption
Things to Avoid
  • Alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before the test
  • Fatty foods if fasting is required
  • Certain herbal supplements that affect liver tests

Day of Your Test

  • Take medications as usual unless advised otherwise
  • Inform technician of all medications and supplements

What This Measures

To screen for liver disease, monitor liver health, and detect damage from medications or alcohol.

  • ALT and AST - enzymes released when liver cells are damaged
  • Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) - enzyme related to bile ducts
  • Bilirubin - breakdown product of red blood cells processed by liver
  • Albumin and total protein - proteins made by the liver

Why This Test Matters

The liver performs vital functions including filtering blood, producing proteins, and processing nutrients. Early detection of liver problems allows treatment before permanent damage occurs.

Normal Ranges

ALT
Alanine aminotransferase
7-56 U/L
AST
Aspartate aminotransferase
10-40 U/L
Bilirubin
Bile pigment
0.1-1.2 mg/dL
Albumin
Protein made by liver
3.5-5.0 g/dL

Reference intervals vary by laboratory, analyzer, methodology, population, and units. The ranges shown here are for education only. Always interpret your results against the reference interval printed on your own lab report.

After the Test

  • Resume normal eating and activities
  • No special precautions needed

Understanding Results

If High

Elevated liver enzymes may indicate liver damage, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or medication effects. Additional testing may be needed.

If Low

Low albumin may indicate liver disease, malnutrition, or kidney problems.

Good to Know

  • Many medications can affect liver enzymes
  • Alcohol significantly impacts liver tests
  • Intense exercise can temporarily elevate AST
  • Results should be interpreted with other clinical findings

Follow Up

  • Abnormal results usually require follow-up testing
  • May need imaging studies or liver biopsy
  • Regular monitoring if taking medications that affect liver
